Smart and Sustainable Forestry Workshop Organized in Our Faculty
The “Smart and Sustainable Forestry: Looking to the Future from an Engineering Perspective” workshop, hosted online by Bartın University Faculty of Forestry on December 5, 2024 , was held with great interest. Shedding light on the future of the forestry sector, the workshop deeply addressed the role of sustainability and modern technologies in forestry practices. With the contributions of expert academics, public institutions and private sector representatives, the event, which attracted more than 130 participants, hosted opening discussions on the challenges and opportunities faced by the sector. The workshop paved the way for new ideas that will shape the future of forestry. The opening speeches of the workshop were made by BARÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Orhan UZUN and Bartın Faculty of Forestry Dean Prof. Dr. Birsen DURKAYA.

Drawing attention to the importance of sustainable forest ecosystems against climate change, Rector Prof. Dr. Orhan UZUN said, “Protecting our lives depends on protecting our forests, and protecting the climate begins with protecting forests. As Bartın University, we also attach great importance to sustainable forest ecosystems. By prioritizing the development of environmentally friendly strategies in our education system, we create awareness among our students by integrating smart systems, innovation and new technologies and biodiversity protection studies into our curriculum. ”
Dean of the Faculty of Forestry Prof. Dr. Birsen DURKAYA said, “The main goal of our workshop is to develop solutions for the future in the context of sustainability, technology and innovation in the field of forestry and to increase cooperation opportunities with an interdisciplinary perspective. With this workshop, we aim to create a platform where we will produce academic and sectoral solutions to today's priority problems such as the effects of climate change on forest ecosystems and carbon footprint production. As a university, we strive to be a pioneer in the field of sustainable forestry at regional and national levels .”

Prof. Dr. Özden GÖRÜCÜ (Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University, Faculty of Forestry)
He discussed the effects of climate change on forests with his presentation titled “The Effects of Climate Change on Forest Ecosystems”.
Alper Tolga ARSLAN (General Directorate of Forestry, Strategy Development Department)
In his presentation titled “Forest Management and Sustainability Strategies”, he shared sustainable forest management strategies.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Osman KOMUT (Gumushane University, Gumushane Vocational School)
In his speech titled “Green Certifications and Sustainable Supply Chain Management” he touched on the importance of green certificates in the forestry sector.
Fadime KARAGÖZ (SBG)
He provided information on industry practices regarding “Green Certification Practices”.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kadir Alperen COŞKUNER (Karadeniz Technical University, Faculty of Forestry)
In his presentation titled “Forest Fires and Climate Change” he highlighted firefighting strategies and the effects of climate change.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Can VATANDAŞLAR (Artvin Coruh University, Faculty of Forestry)
In his speech titled “New Technologies and Innovations in Forest Engineering” he emphasized the use of technological innovations in forestry.
Prof. Dr. Küçük Hüseyin KOÇ (Istanbul University – Cerrahpaşa, Faculty of Forestry)
In his presentation titled “Smart Production Systems in the Forest Industry (Industry 4.0 Technologies) ”, he evaluated the role of smart production systems in the forestry sector.
Prof. Dr. Kamil KAYGUSUZ (Karadeniz Technical University, Faculty of Science)
He shared his work on converting forest waste into energy with his presentation titled “Bioenergy and Valorization of Forest Waste”.
Yiğit GÜNGÖR and Dr. Burcu GİRGİNER OZONLU (Kastamonu Entegre A.Ş.)
In their presentation titled “Carbon Footprint, Carbon Trading and Carbon Footprint Management with Biomaterial Production”, they conveyed their sectoral practices regarding carbon management and biomaterial production.
The topics discussed at the workshop created a strong knowledge sharing platform for sustainable forestry and environmental awareness. This event, which adds value to the forestry sector, is expected to not only encourage academic and industrial collaborations but also inspire innovative forestry practices of the future.
