With BARU's project, pinecones will be transformed into high-value-added products.
With BARU's project supported by TUBITAK, a method will be tried for the first time to obtain high-value-added products from conifer cones.
BARU Bartın Faculty of Forestry, Department of Forest Industrial Engineering faculty member Prof. Dr. Ayben Kılıç Pekgözlü supervised the project, which was conducted by Özge Özgürlük, a YÖK 100/2000 Ph.D. scholarship holder. The project was deemed worthy of support within the scope of the TUBITAK 1002-A Rapid Support Program.
Waste cones will be used at BARU
The project titled "Extraction of Lignin from Coniferous Cones with Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent and Determination of Their Bioactivities" aims to obtain lignin for the first time from cones of Eastern Black Pine, Cedar of Lebanon, Taurus Cedar, and Stone Pine, which are naturally distributed in Turkey, using the microwave method. The antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the lignins obtained as project outputs will be examined. Thus, lignin, which ceases to be a waste material, will now be an important resource for next-generation smart materials with its sustainable and renewable properties.
Providing information about the project, Özgürlük said, "The decrease in natural resources has prompted consumers to develop more efficient ways of using these resources rationally and economically. With our project, supported by TUBITAK, we will conduct studies to better utilize cones, which are considered waste, to make our forests and lignocellulosic-based raw material resources more efficient. Additionally, with this study, we will obtain high-value-added lignin for the first time using the microwave method with a deep eutectic solvent."
"We are working on sustainability with local and national resources."
BARU Rector Prof. Dr. Orhan Uzun, emphasizing the importance of this project conducted at a time when high-value-added, domestic and national product production is of strategic importance, said, "We are conducting intensive work to turn the project culture into practice by all our components, and we are becoming more motivated for the future as the number of supported projects increases every day. I wholeheartedly believe that this study, which aims to produce high-value-added products using local and national resources, will contribute to our development dynamics. In this regard, I congratulate Prof. Dr. Ayben Kılıç Pekgözlü and our doctoral student Özge Özgürlük for their efforts in carrying out studies in line with sustainability. I thank the Director of the Graduate School, Prof. Dr. Sabri Gök, and the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Prof. Dr. Birsen Durkaya, for their contributions to our institutional progress. I also thank our President of the Board of Higher Education, Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar, our members of the Board of Higher Education, and our President of TUBITAK, Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, for their support in motivating us to achieve better results."
